My journey into learning why olive wood is such a treasure.
When I started selling olive wood pieces in my shop, I found myself asking: Why is olive wood so good? It’s beautiful, sure—but is it practical? Is it sustainable? And why has it been used for centuries, especially in the kitchen?
The deeper I looked, the more I realized olive wood isn't just pretty—it's purposeful. So, let’s dive in! Here are some of the coolest things I’ve learned about olive wood that might surprise you too.
Q: Did you know that olive wood is naturally antibacterial?
A: I didn’t either at first! But it’s true. Olive wood has natural antibacterial properties, making it a hygienic choice for kitchen tools like spoons, bowls, and cutting boards. It’s safer and more resistant to germs compared to other types of wood—or even plastic. So if you’re worried about food safety, olive wood has you covered.
Q: Olive wood is eco-friendly? Wait… really?
A: Yes! Olive trees are typically harvested for wood only after they’ve finished their fruit-bearing life. This makes use of the entire tree’s lifespan. A lot of olive wood products come from pruned branches or trees that no longer produce olives, reducing waste and making it a sustainable, eco-friendly choice. Pretty amazing, right?
Q: I did know olive wood is beautiful—but do you know why?
A: Olive wood has a stunning, rich grain that ranges from warm honey to deep amber, often with striking dark streaks. No two pieces are ever exactly alike. That’s why it’s a favorite for handcrafted items like kitchenware, jewelry, decor… and the gorgeous olive wood boards you’ll find in my shop!
Q: Is olive wood really that durable and strong?
A: I wasn’t 100% sure at first either. But yes—it’s incredibly dense and hard, making it super resistant to scratches, stains, and everyday wear. That’s why it’s such a go-to for things like cutting boards and utensils. Plus, because of its density, it doesn’t absorb odors or liquids as easily as other woods. Win-win.
Q: How do you care for olive wood?
A: Simple is best! Olive wood polishes beautifully and actually gets smoother over time, developing a gorgeous patina. Just hand-wash (no dishwashers!) and occasionally rub it with food-safe mineral oil or olive oil to keep it nourished and prevent it from drying out.
✨ A Little History & Cultural Significance
For centuries, olive wood has been treasured in Mediterranean cultures. It symbolizes peace, wisdom, and longevity. Artisans have carved it into everything from functional kitchen tools to spiritual keepsakes. When you hold a piece of olive wood, you’re holding a bit of history and tradition in your hands.
I hope you found this as fascinating as I did. Whether you’re using olive wood for serving up charcuterie, stirring soup, or just admiring it on your countertop—it’s not just a pretty piece; it’s a story of sustainability, history, and craftsmanship.
