That is why we are incredibly proud to partner with ARTICLE22, the creators of PEACEBOMB jewelry, and to support the extraordinary mission of Legacies of War.
This is jewelry born from an unlikely material—and an extraordinary story of transformation.
From Instruments of War to Objects of Beauty
Between 1964 and 1973, more than two million tons of ordnance were dropped on Laos. Decades later, unexploded ordnance, commonly referred to as UXO, remains buried throughout parts of the country, continuing to affect farmland, villages, families, and future generations. Laos remains the most heavily bombed country per capita in history.
Yet from this painful history came an extraordinary act of ingenuity.
In the village of Naphia in Laos, local artisans began recovering aluminum war scrap and melting it down to create useful objects, including spoons. When ARTICLE22 founder Elizabeth Suda encountered this tradition, she saw the possibility of connecting the artisans' remarkable craftsmanship with a global audience.
ARTICLE22 began working with artisans in the village in 2009, and PEACEBOMB was born. Today, remnants associated with war are transformed by hand into jewelry—modern pieces carrying a history that cannot be separated from the people who created them.
Something once made for destruction becomes something entirely different.
A bracelet. A necklace. A message. A symbol of peace.
Jewelry That Creates a Virtuous Circle
The beauty of ARTICLE22's work lies not only in what these materials become, but in what their transformation helps make possible.
Each PEACEBOMB piece supports traditional Lao artisan livelihoods, village development and community initiatives, while ARTICLE22 also contributes to Mines Advisory Group (MAG), whose teams work to safely clear unexploded ordnance from contaminated land.
ARTICLE22 describes this as a virtuous circle.
Artisans transform remnants of the past into something new. Their work reaches people around the world. The jewelry creates income and opportunity. Purchases help support the clearing of dangerous land. And each person who wears a piece carries the story forward.
That is intentional design in its truest form.
The Work of Legacies of War
Our connection to this story also introduces us to the remarkable work of Legacies of War.
Founded in 2004, Legacies of War is a Lao American- and women-led movement working to address the lasting effects of war in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Through education and advocacy, the organization raises awareness of unexploded ordnance, advocates for resources for clearance and survivor assistance, preserves stories that might otherwise be forgotten, and creates space for healing.
Their work is rooted in three powerful ideas:
History. Healing. Hope.
Understanding what happened matters.
Remembering the people affected matters.
And creating a safer future matters.
ARTICLE22 and Legacies of War have joined together on special jewelry collaborations that combine these missions, allowing something as personal as the jewelry we wear to become a vehicle for awareness and action. ARTICLE22's Trailblazer collaboration, for example, directly supports Legacies of War while also supporting Lao artisans and demining efforts.
Why This Partnership Matters to The Quarry Shop
When we founded The Quarry Shop, we wanted to approach retail differently.
We wanted to know who made something, where it came from, what materials were used, and why its story mattered.
We wanted to celebrate craftsmanship rather than disposability.
We wanted to seek out pieces that encourage connection—to artisans, cultures, traditions, nature, and one another.
And whenever possible, we wanted a purchase to leave something positive behind.
ARTICLE22 and Legacies of War embody so much of what we believe intentional living can mean.

ARTICLE22 was named in reference to Article 22 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and from its beginning the company has used art and design as a way to connect people with a larger humanitarian story.
